This project initially focuses on a HOPE VI revitalization project with the goal of expanding active living strategies to future development in Metro-Louisville. Planning and program efforts will be developed through ACTIVE Louisville, a broad collation of community partners, which includes the Louisville Metro Housing Authority (LMHA).
LMHA is a recent recipient of a HOPE VI revitalization grant for the demolition and redevelopment of Phase 1 of the Clarksdale public housing site. The future Clarksdale community and related development activities in adjacent areas will incorporate design elements that promote active living. ACTIVE Louisville partners also will assess existing planning/zoning regulations; conduct design charettes; examine current deterrents to physical activity; encourage public input regarding proposed changes; create incentives and guidelines for businesses and developers to incorporate active living features into projects; and educate community designers.
Promotional efforts will include developing educational tools for the medical community, community events, and media campaigns. Other components will include physical activity programming for youth and adults.
This project will serve as an example for others who wish to incorporate active living designs into urban, economically distressed neighborhoods; apply active living concepts from a specific pilot area to a broader geographical area; and assess the impact of supportive leadership from a mayor for the active living initiative.
This organization was one of 25 demonstration projects selected by Active Living by Design, a national program of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF).
