Sunnyside Piazza
Description

Sunnyside Piazza has become a great community organizing element and traffic calming opportunity that is transforming an intersection into gathering space. The Piazza consists of a giant sunflower street mural, community kiosk, and an art wall created with sustainable building techniques by residents and local artists.

Sunnyside Piazza is located one block away from the restaurants and cafes along the popular transportation corridor. Neighborhood residents designed and developed this gathering space to reinforce a positive sense of community, provide a focal point, reduce crime, and express the local culture of their community. Residents of this densely packed neighborhood walk throughout the Piazza to visit the kiosk, run into friends, or simply to enjoy the Piazza. The intersection is open to cars, except during community block parties. One long-term vision for the intersection is to raise it with bricks and pavers to be level with the sidewalks, further defining it as a pedestrian space.

The City Repair Project, a Portland based non-profit community organization, worked with the neighborhood residents by providing artistic support, technical resources, and installation guidance to comply with the local ordinance permitting such projects.
