Step Forward
Description

Erlanger, Kentucky, developed a multi-faceted approach to introduce active living concepts that combines programs, policies, interdepartmental cooperation and partnerships with the private sector. The City implemented three demonstration projects to promote active living strategies.

Step Forward, Erlanger's Sidewalk Master Plan, is an initiative to expand and complete the city's sidewalk system to promote walkability. A community survey identified all the missing links to complete a city-wide sidewalk loop at an estimated cost of $1.75 million. The city then appropriated $15,000 for sidewalk and crosswalk improvements to create safe routes to school. Without the master plan, the missing sidewalk sections may have gone unfunded for many years.

Erlanger Center, a city-led development project, will create a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood on an underused parcel between two highway interchanges. The mixed-use development project will allow residents to live, work and play without using the automobile.

Erlanger joined forces with a national developer to transform an existing lake and open space area into a community and regional asset. The project, Doe Run Park, will increase opportunities for physical activity by linking adjacent communities and developments to a new park via trails and greenways.
