The Metropolitan Planning Commission of Nashville and Davidson County has developed a Strategic Plan for Sidewalks and Bikeways to enable Metro to effectively plan and implement facilities that improve safety, enhance mobility, and promote a higher quality of life.
The 12-month planning process that led to the creation of the proposed Pedestrian and Bicycle System involved data collection, evaluation, and assessment of pedestrian and bicyclist conditions and needs. The comprehensive plan addresses all aspects of pedestrian and bicycle planning including building well designed facilities, promoting the benefits of walking and bicycling, educating users of all modes how to share the streets, and enforcing laws that help improve safety.
Some of the objectives addressed include providing safe and convenient pedestrian and bicycle facilities, maximizing the multi-modal function of existing streets, establishing a methodology for prioritizing sidewalk projects on existing streets, and increasing the percentage of trips undertaken on foot and bicycle.
A key component of the strategic plan development was community involvement. Three working committees were established to facilitate involvement of quasi-public and government agencies, and citizens were invited to participate through public meetings. Media campaigns were incorporated into each phase of the planning process.
