KidsWalk works with elementary schools in the metro Atlanta region to increase the numbers of parents walking their children to school. A primary component of the program is an on-line reporting system for fixing hazards near schools, which is initiated by PEDS, a member-based advocacy organization dedicated to making metro Atlanta safe and accessible for all pedestrians. The PEDS website helps concerned parents determine the correct jurisdiction and then provides a menu, with photos, of problems and improvements. Once a problem is chosen (such as faded crosswalk markings or a short walk signal) the website provides them with additional information as well as an online form that is directed to the correct official. Peds also works to educate the adults on safety issues and work with the appropriate government agencies to improve the walkability of the streets around schools. Emphasis is on the connectivity of increased physical activity, improved health, improved air quality and improved sense of community.
PEDS is a nonprofit organization. It is membership driven, and also has more than a dozen corporate sponsors.
