The Bicycle Friendly Community Campaign is a national awards program that recognizes municipalities that actively support bicycling. A Bicycle-Friendly Community provides safe accommodation for cycling and encourages its residents to bike for transportation and recreation. The League of American Bicyclists administers the Bicycle Friendly Community Campaign.
In order to receive a designation of Gold, Silver or Bronze, each community must go through a rigorous application process. They must complete and submit a comprehensive application that asks about bicycle facilities, laws governing bicycling, programs to encourage bicycle use, bicycle advisory committees and other issues. Once the initial application is approved, the community then undergoes a detailed audit of the engineering, education, encouragement, enforcement and evaluation efforts for bicycling in their municipality. The League provides technical assistance for completing the audit.
For communities interested in starting the application process, the League provides an Action Plan for Bicycle Friendly Communities and a wealth of other information. The League recognizes newly designated Bicycle Friendly Communities with an awards ceremony, a Bicycle-Friendly Community road sign, and a formal press announcement.
