Route 9a/West Side Highway Reconstruction
Description

The Route 9A Greenway, a 5.4-mile urban boulevard that currently stretches from Battery Park to 59th Street, provides a new vehicular and pedestrian corridor along New York City's Westside waterfront. This dedicated bike route and waterfront pedestrian esplanade is part of the 150-mile Hudson River Valley Greenway that will provide a continuous pedestrian and bicycle route connecting parks and open space throughout the historic Hudson River Corridor.

A six-lane auto boulevard separates the neighborhoods to the east from the walkway and the river to its west, posing pedestrian access and safety concerns. Barrier free and signalized at-grade crosswalks integrate the roadway into the pedestrian scale of the adjacent neighborhoods, as well as protect view corridors and improve pedestrian access and safety. The boulevard's 19 foot-wide raised median provides a large, central refuge area for pedestrians and protects trees and shrubs from vehicles and roadway salt.

New York State Department of Transportation will spend $6.5 million to install six raised intersections at key intersections to slow motorists as they cross the greenway. The overall design reinforces the pedestrian environment through traffic calming, and enhanced architectural streetscape treatments help create a sense of place.
