Campaign for Safe Routes to School Legislation
Description

The Texas Bicycle Coalition (TBC) spearheaded a grassroots campaign to push the state legislature to pass, and then fund, a statewide Safe Routes to School program in 2001 funded by transportation dollars. The effort began when an anti-bicycling measure was introduced into the Texas legislature, mobilizing advocates. The campaign engaged bicycle riders, bicycle dealers, parents and many others to strike down the anti-cycling legislation and to push the legislature to pass the Safe Routes to School program, (named the Mathew Brown Act in honor of a child killed while riding his bicycle). TBC then launched an effort to publicize the grant funds so that local jurisdictions could apply for the funds. The initial $3 million program was overwhelmed by applications amounting $40 million, and the program has expanded and continued.

Goal

Improve pedestrian and bicycle safety
