Safe Routes to School Education Program
Description

In December 2004 the Texas Bicycle Coalition Education Fund (TBCEF) received a three-year $1.5 million "Safe Routes to School Program" grant, funded in part by the U.S. Department of Education, through the Carol M. White Physical Education Program.

The grant will help launch a massive bicycle safety, physical activity, and health awareness program, aimed at tens of thousands of elementary school students in North and West Texas.

The grant includes the coalition's award-winning "SuperCyclist 2.0" bicycle and pedestrian safety education curriculum, training 750 teachers to teach the curriculum - potentially reaching 38,000 fourth- and fifth-grade students in 298 schools. The second major component of the program consists of encouraging children to bike and walk to school. This will contribute to their health and decrease traffic congestion near the schools.

Goal

Promote health and safety awareness
