Local Aid Programs
Description

The New Jersey DOT funds several local aid programs that are aimed at helping local governments provide more transportation choice, particularly for active travel through bicycling and walking. The state provided 27 local governments with more than $4 million through its bikeways program; 45 local governments received more than $4 million in funding for 'Safe Streets to School' safety improvements. Two other programs promote physical activity indirectly; the Centers of Place program supports "non-traditional transportation improvements that advance municipal growth management objectives;" 13 communities received $2.1 million in 2005 for projects such as streetscape improvements. The state is also distributing $ 1 million in 2005 to assist in the development of designated Transit Villages.
