This program the the Metropolitan Transportation Commission of California's Bay Area uses federal transportation funds to create more vital and livable neighborhoods. The program supports local transportation projects that improve the range of transportation choices by adding or enhancing pedestrian, transit and/or bicycle faclities, but it goes beyond a typical infrastructure program. It emphasizes creating new transportation linkages, gives strong support to collaborative and inclusive planning processes, and encourages compact, walkable development by providing extra transportation support for areas building high-density housing in a mixed-use environment, or building infill or transit-oriented development.
Bonus transportation dollars are available for developments that include affordable housing. Since its inception it has supported 129 community-oriented projects at nearly $57 million. It has supported greenways, streetscape improvements, public space redesigns, intersection and street redesigns, improved access to transit stations and other projects.
