Indy Greenways, a department of Indy Parks, is a government agency in charge of the creation, expansion and upkeep of an extensive network of greenway trails for bikers and pedestrians in central Indianapolis and its suburbs. These trails form a link between various parks and allow for easy non-motorized commuting between homes and offices.
The agency has constructed fourteen paths; it will continue to expand and update these, as well as designate new ones. In accordance with a 2003 Master Plan, the agency identifies important green spaces.often along rivers.to maintain and connect to the network, while encouraging smart growth and environmentally friendly development along the routes taken by the trails. The goal is to provide residents with an outstanding trail system that preserves the environmental health of river areas, gives accessible opportunities for physical activity and recreation, and fosters economic development by allowing easy access to businesses, making Indianapolis a better place to live.
Indy Greenways is an ongoing project that will continue to expand and develop the city.s network of trails, as well as maintain them to ensure their continued use.
