Greenbelt Walkway Extension
Description

The Greenbelt Walkway is a 2.3-mile pedestrian/bicycling path that connects to a larger 104-plus-mile corridor that runs through central Maine.

The extension upgrade of a footpath along Pleasantdale in South Portland was spearheaded by Healthy Maine Walks Coalition, which strives to help every town and community in the state have or expand a trail designed to promote healthier living. Overcoming a debate between the city and neighbors bordering the proposed extension, the project received the mayor.s endorsement, and became a reality in 2003.

The path wraps around scenic vistas and lookouts but also snakes its way through neighborhoods, making it very much an urban path. The Greenbelt Walkway has become a popular route for general recreation, as well as commuting to work and nearby shopping. It has also helped boost property values along the route, signaling the demand among homebuyers for places to by physically active.

Goal

To bring health, economic, and recreational benefits to individuals and the community.
