Formed in the spring of 2000, the Sheyenne River Valley (SRV) Chapter of the North Country Trail is North Dakota.s first officially organized group of trail-making volunteers.
Since the group's inception, some 24 miles of trail along the shores and headwaters of Lake Ashtabula have been completed. This hands-on project involves members working on both ends of the trail, walking prospective routes, staking the best paths and attempting to create sections segment by segment. They.re also making detailed maps and lists of construction tasks. The trail will eventually connect to a segment that runs through the town of Valley City, providing recreation and alternative means of transportation to residents and visitors.
The SRV Chapter is receiving vital assistance from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, North Country Trail volunteers and Boy Scouts of America. The Chapter has received a North Country Trail Association Field grant, Challenge Cost Share grant and National Recreational Trails grant. A 2005 Kodak American Greenways grant is allowing for trail development and improvements such the purchasing of materials to build fence stiles and assist with expenses incurred for trail construction events.
The SRV Chapter also proactively sponsors local hikes and trail activities.
