Gwynns Falls Trails
Description

Trust for Public Land (TPL) helped establish this 14-mile hiking and biking trail through Baltimore City that follows the Gwynns Falls stream valley from Leakin Park near historic Franklintown through 2,000 acres of parkland, more than 30 neighborhoods and numerous historic and cultural sites. TPL also raised funds to create Leon Day Park a few miles downstream from the trail.

Working in partnership with the City of Baltimore, the State of Maryland and local Baltimore nonprofit, Parks & People Foundation, TPL sees the Gwynns Falls Trail project as a way to revitalize underused parks of West Baltimore and provide meaningful opportunities for outdoor recreation and environmental education to underserved Baltimore City neighborhoods.

Residents are empowered with a sense of local ownership of the project by being partnered with design and planning professionals to create Trail specifications and amenities, some of which are built by residents' own hands. Project development also includes reforestation projects and environmental education programs reacquainting residents and school students with the Gwynns Falls stream as a precious natural resource and a major tributary of the Chesapeake Bay.

TPL is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to conserving land for people to enjoy as parks and open space. Since 1972, TPL has conserved over two million acres of land nationwide.
