Planners can reduce chronic diseases
City planners can—and should—support policies and zoning regulations that encourage everyday physical activity and access to healthy food, especially among communities at greatest risk for obesity, diabetes and asthma.
For example, New York City has high rates of obesity and asthma, despite being less dependent on cars than many other cities across the nation. When developing new land use regulations, planners should consider how to incorporate traffic calming measures and increased opportunities for recreation.
