Pedestrian bridge opens over downtown Atlanta freeway

Providing nearly an acre of new green space, Atlanta re-opened its Fifth Street Bridge as a park and pedestrian bridge, replete with bike paths, decorative lampposts, trellises, grass and nine-foot walls to stifle the sound of interstate traffic below. Georgia’s Department of Transportation increased the bridge three times in size, adding a host of pedestrian and bicycle friendly amenities to encourage more people to get out of their cars. It connects Georgia Tech’s main campus with new buildings at Technology Square, providing pedestrians and bicyclists with a safe route over I-75/I-85, which hums with traffic 17 feet below.
