Trips For Kids brings cycling to underserved youth

Trips for Kids, a national nonprofit that started as a one-woman operation in Marin County, California, is celebrating the formation of its 50th chapter. The organization and its nonprofit partners around the country help underserved kids to discover the joy and lifelong health benefits of mountain biking. Chapters receive a start-up gear including mountain bikes, helmets and equipment, as well as tips and guidance on how to lead safe and successful rides. Sponsors include REI, Clif Bar and Trek bikes, just to name a few, and honorary board members include Bonnie Raitt, Robin Williams and Carlos Santana.

Each nonprofit chapter embraces TFK’s mission to addresses the unique needs of its community—from inner-city urban teens to kids living on reservations or participating in intervention programs. For example, Trips For Kids Dunkirk, in upstate New York, is part of a pregnancy prevention program for teens, where mountain biking is taught as a lifelong sport.
