New Summary Report: Atlanta SMARTRAQ Program

This recently completed report summarizes a broad range of results from the Atlanta Based SMARTRAQ study of health, transportation and the environment.

SMARTRAQ (AKA the Clean Air Act meets the Obesity Epidemic) was initiated in 1998 by Dr. Lawrence Frank to study household travel, land use, physical activity, obesity and air quality relationships in Atlanta. Seven papers have been accepted for publication on SMARTRAQ already with many more new studies underway. The report synthesizes much of this new research on health and the built environment, and documents an unmet demand for more walkable environments and new evidence on how community design and preferences relate with travel patterns, physical activity and obesity. The study was funded through a series of grants Frank obtained from state, federal and private entities. He and his colleagues began a second phase of SMARTRAQ a year ago to re-contact participants in a follow up study.

Download the report or find more information on SMARTRAQ along with numerous reports, journal articles and resources on the website.
