Oregon to increase physical education requirements

New and increased physical education requirements in Oregon will require at least half of P.E. time be exercise. Oregon’s governor designated $860,000 to train and hire staff needed to implement the measure over the next decade to address childhood obesity. The money falls short of the estimated $5 million needed to help every district meet the new standards. However, an additional $140,000 was set aside to study spending trends and the effect of the requirements on childhood obesity rates. The National Coalition for Promoting Physical Activity is lobbying to add similar physical education requirements to the federal No Child Left Behind Act, which is up for reauthorization.
